The homes located in Winterbourne near Bristol were invited by Winterbourne Parish Council to the opening of the South West’s first fully accessible play area. The old Frenchay Hospital site has been developed into housing, and the builders Redrow and in conjunction with the charity Whizz Kidz they have designed this amazing play area and community space.
On such a glorious day, residents got to enjoy playing table tennis, four in a row, giant KerPlunk, having a spin on the roundabout and bounce on the trampoline! The team also joined in the fun as well!
Wheelchair users can access the trampoline and roundabout while in their chairs, and the table tennis tables are the right height to tuck wheelchairs in underneath. A chess / drafts table has two seats but is also designed for wheelchair users. You just need to take along your own bats, balls, and chess pieces to make full use of the facilities. The established trees add to the tranquil setting; all those involved in the project have created a very special community space.
Growing Community Connections
The Grove and Blossom Fields ensure residents remain connected with the community especially as so many residents have lived locally all their lives. The homes attend the Winterbourne Parish Council’s monthly community coffee morning and are always invited along to local events.
