Our Blossom Fields Nursing Home in Winterbourne, Bristol were thrilled to be among the first to receive the Royal Mint Museum Reminiscence Box, a delightful collection of historical memorabilia. Residents from both The Grove and Blossom Fields enjoyed delving into the past, reminiscing over the fascinating items and marvelling at the first glimpse of King Charles on a coin.
A Decimal Revolution
The box also provided a fascinating glimpse into the transition to decimal currency in the UK in 1971. Residents shared their memories of the time, recalling the overnight price increases that accompanied the change. A pint of milk, once 5p, jumped to 16p, while a loaf of bread went from 9p to 25p. Even four-star petrol saw a significant increase, going from 8p a litre to 25p.
More Than Just a Box
The Royal Mint Museum Reminiscence Box was more than just a collection of items. It sparked conversations, brought back memories, and connected residents with their shared history. It was a valuable tool for stimulating reminiscence and fostering a sense of community.
